As part of the research and funding programme “City of the Future: Healthy, Sustainable Metropolises” of the Fritz and Hildegard Berg Foundation (in the Stifterverband), the project “Urban Development and Health – Disciplinary and Sectoral Bridge Building” is running as a longer-term component, cf. https://rfehr.eu/portfolio/2013-project-urban-health-building-bridges/ / Im Rahmen des Forschungs- und Förderprogramms „Stadt der Zukunft: Gesunde, nachhaltige Metropolen“ der Fritz und Hildegard Berg-Stiftung (im Stifterverband) läuft als längerfristig angelegte Komponente das Projekt „Stadtentwicklung und Gesundheit – disziplinärer und sektoraler Brückenbau“, siehe https://rfehr.eu/portfolio/2013-project-urban-health-building-bridges/.

Project phase V was approved on 13.11.2020 and started on 1.1.2021, cf. www.stadt-und-gesundheit.de and www.urban-health.de. A brief portrait of the project has been formulated as an overview for all interested parties / Die Projektphase V wurde am 13.11.2020 bewilligt und startete am 1.1.2021, siehe auch www.stadt-und-gesundheit.de. Not only in Corona times: Urban development should also promote health, sustainability and social compatibility / Nicht nur in Corona-Zeiten: Stadtentwicklung sollte auch Gesundheit, Nachhaltigkeit und Sozialverträglichkeit fördern.

Long before Corona, it was already clear that the issue of health is closely interwoven with all sectors of society, including housing, education, work and transport. “All sectors are health sectors”; and they themselves are also dependent on health. Therefore, the funding programme “City of the Future” develops new concepts and strategies for healthy, sustainable metropolises. Within this framework, the “Building Bridges” project is about providing impetus for Sustainable Urban Health, supporting exchange on the topic, bringing together research results and promoting their dissemination / Weit vor Corona war schon klar: Das Thema Gesundheit ist mit allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft samt Wohnen, Bildung, Arbeit und Verkehr aufs Engste verwoben. „Alle Sektoren sind Gesundheitssektoren“; und sie sind auch selbst auf Gesundheit angewiesen. Daher entwickelt das Förderprogramm „Stadt der Zukunft“ neue Konzepte und Strategien für gesunde, nachhaltige Metropolen. In diesem Rahmen geht es beim Projekt „Brückenbau“ darum, Impulse für Nachhaltige StadtGesundheit zu geben, den Austausch über das Thema zu unterstützen, Forschungsergebnisse zusammenzuführen und deren Verbreitung zu fördern.

The Corona pandemic is like a crash course on health issues. We are witnessing in fast motion how social disadvantage is intensifying and environmental sustainability is threatening to take a back seat. At the same time, the pandemic is also generating calls for change(s) of course: towards careful foresight, better protection for the disadvantaged and increased resilience in society. The view is gaining ground that efforts to protect biodiversity and conserve resources must also continue in order to mitigate future dramas. Accordingly, green and blue infrastructures must be developed in a sustainable manner / Die Corona-Pandemie wirkt wie ein Schnellkurs zu Gesundheitsthemen. Wir erleben im Zeitraffer, wie soziale Benachteiligungen sich verstärken und ökologische Nachhaltigkeit in den Hintergrund zu treten droht. Gleichzeitig bringt die Pandemie auch den Ruf nach Kurswechsel(n) hervor: hin zu sorgfältiger Vorausschau, besserem Schutz für Benachteiligte und verstärkter Widerstandskraft der Gesellschaft. Die Auffassung setzt sich durch, dass auch das Bemühen um Biodiversität und Ressourcenschonung nicht nachlassen darf, um künftige Dramen abzumildern. Demnach gilt es, grüne und blaue Infrastrukturen zukunftsfähig zu entwickeln.

Here, the current discussion points in a direction that also underlies the funding programme “City of the Future”: in addition to countless individual questions, it is also a matter of better recognising important interrelationships by looking “at the whole”, making comparisons, strengthening prevention and health promotion and making course corrections. For this purpose, the concept “Sustainable Urban Health” was developed, which aims both at gaining knowledge (“broadening the field of vision“) and at practical action (“building bridges“) / Hier weist die aktuelle Diskussion in eine Richtung, die auch dem Förderprogramm „Stadt der Zukunft“ zugrunde liegt: neben zahllosen Einzelfragen geht es auch darum, im Blick „aufs Ganze“ wichtige Zusammenhänge besser zu erkennen, Vergleiche durchzuführen, Prävention und Gesundheitsförderung zu stärken und Kurskorrekturen vorzunehmen. Hierzu entstand das Konzept „Nachhaltige StadtGesundheit“, das sowohl auf Erkenntnisgewinn („Blickfelderweiterung“) als auch auf Handlungspraxis („Brückenbau“) zielt.

“Broadening the field of vision“, among other things, implies the coupling of health with ecological sustainability and social justice, as presented in the first volumes of a dedicated book series and represented as a condensate on the website www.stadt-und-gesundheit.de. In order for the numerous institutions in the city and region that are involved in the major goal of “health” to use common ground positively and to reduce possible conflicts, it still makes sense to “build bridges“: among other things between scientific disciplines, urban sectors and also between science, politics and civil society, e.g. through working groups and discussion events / Als „Blickfelderweiterung“ geht es u.a. um die Kopplung von Gesundheit mit ökologischer Nachhaltigkeit und sozialer Gerechtigkeit, wie in den ersten Bänden einer eigenen Buchreihe dargelegt und als Kondensat auf der Webseite www.stadt-und-gesundheit.de zu finden. Um für die zahlreichen Institutionen in Stadt und Region, die am großen Ziel „Gesundheit“ mitwirken, Gemeinsamkeiten positiv zu nutzen und mögliche Konflikte zu mindern, ist nach wie vor ein „Brückenbau“ sinnvoll: u.a. zwischen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, Stadtsektoren und auch zwischen Wissenschaft, Politik und Zivilgesellschaft, u.a. durch Arbeitsgruppen und Diskussionsveranstaltungen.

In the new project phase, a case study on sustainable urban health in the city state of Hamburg is being expanded; the willingness to participate in this new form of health reporting is gratifyingly high in science and practice, and the interest in the result is great. A planned conference is aimed at experts and civil society with the aim of bringing together sub-topics such as urban health, urban epidemiology, urban green and urban blue, mobility, and urban and regional planning, in a meaningful way. The conference will take place in cooperation with partner institutions and networks and is intended to formulate concrete recommendations, for example, on planning practice and training courses / In der neuen Projektphase wird eine Fallstudie zur nachhaltigen StadtGesundheit im Stadtstaat Hamburg ausgebaut; die Bereitschaft, an dieser neuen Form gesundheitlicher Berichterstattung mitzuwirken ist in Wissenschaft und Praxis erfreulich hoch und das Interesse am Ergebnis groß. Eine geplante Konferenz richtet sich an Fachvertreter*innen und Zivilgesellschaft mit dem Ziel, Teilthemen wie Urbane Gesundheit, Stadtepidemiologie, Stadtgrün und Stadtblau, Mobilität sowie Stadt- und Regionalplanung sinnvoll zusammenzubringen. Die Tagung wird in Zusammenarbeit mit Partner-Institutionen und Netzwerken erfolgen und soll konkrete Empfehlungen bspw. zur Planungspraxis und zu Ausbildungsgängen formulieren.

For the cooperation of specialised institutions and the exchange between science and society, the project wants to filter out promising options and show ways of implementation. Furthermore, international cooperation is to be intensified. – It seems certain that integrative approaches and community actions will gain in importance and that effective (expert) planning is necessary. The approaches to CityHealth should contribute to the solution of these tasks / Für die Zusammenarbeit von Fachinstitutionen sowie den Austausch zwischen Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft will das Projekt erfolgversprechende Optionen herausfiltern und Wege zur Umsetzung aufzeigen. Ferner soll die internationale Zusammenarbeit intensiviert werden. – Sicher erscheint, dass integrative Ansätze und Gemeinschaftsaktionen an Bedeutung gewinnen werden und dass wirksame (Fach-)Planung nötig ist. Die Ansätze zu StadtGesundheit sollen zur Lösung dieser Aufgaben beitragen.
