With this requiem, Hindemith paid tribute to two US presidents. The text is based on what Walt Whitman wrote to commemorate Abraham Lincoln. The requiem was composed to remember Franklin D. Roosevelt / Mit diesem Requiem ehrte Paul Hindemith zwei amerikanische Präsidenten. Die Textvorlage bilden Worte, die Walt Whitman dem Gedenken an Abraham Lincoln widmete. Geschrieben wurde Hindemiths Trauermusik im Andenken an Franklin D. Roosevelt.
