In the Sierra Club’s magazine “Sierra” (Sept/Oct 2015, pp. 26-27), Dashka Slater remarks: Pope Francis challenges the world to defend the planet – and the poor. Quoting from the encyclical letter: “We are not faced with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather one complex crisis which is both social and environmental”. The Oakland-based writer and journalist then refers to an environmental justice scholar (Sylvia Hood Washington, who is Catholic and Afro-American) whose mother died in an extended heat wave – the kind of disaster going to be more frequent as the planet warms; and particularly deadly for people with chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes that are epidemic in the black community / In “Sierra” (Sept/Oct 2015, pp. 26-27), der Zeitschrift des Sierra Club, schreibt Dashka Slater: Papst Franziskus fordert die Welt auf, sowohl den Planeten als auch die Armen dieser Welt zu verteidigen. ‘In certain ways, the Expo itself is part of this paradox of abundance, it obeys the culture of waste and does not contribute to a model of equitable and sustainable development,’ Pope Francis said.
The real protagonists of the event should be ‘the faces of the men and women who are hungry, who fall ill and even die because of an insufficient or harmful diet,’ he said.”
