Steinfeld T (24.12.2019): Bald wird’s wieder Tag. Weltgewandter kann die Provinz nicht werden als in den Geschichten und Gedichten Johann Peter Hebels. SZ Nr. 297 (2019), p.14: …Die Kalendergeschichten sind in einer klaren, scheinbar anspruchslosen Sprache verfasst, die zu ihrer Zeit neu war und noch lange nachwirkte, bis hin zu Robert Walser und Franz Kafka … Hebels Alemannisch erscheint als ein[e] Art von Gemeineigentum, in dem es in freien Versen genug Raum und Form für jeden Gedanken gibt, der sich überhaupt fassen lässt, unter den Voraussetzungen einer eng umrissenen Region … Weltgewandter kann die Provinz nicht werden, woran sich zuletzt die Frage anschließt, ob es überhaupt etwas Urbaneres geben kann als eine gründlich gebildete Provinz. Von Hebel aus betrachtet, wäre diese Frage mit einem entschlossenen ,,Nein“ zu beantworten.

Aufgrund seines Gedichtbands Allemannische Gedichte gilt er … als Pionier der alemannischen Mundartliteratur. Sein zweites bekanntes Werk sind zahlreiche, auf Hochdeutsch verfasste Kalendergeschichten.

Towards the end of the book, Phaedrus’s strong and unorthodox personality … begins to re-emerge and the narrator is reconciled with his past …

… the book details two types of personalities: those who are interested mostly in gestalts (romantic viewpoints focused on being “in the moment” …), and those who seek to know details, understand inner workings, and master mechanics (classic viewpoints with application of rational analysis …). … The narrator … understands both viewpoints and is aiming for the middle ground … He seeks to demonstrate that rationality and Zen-like “being in the moment” can harmoniously coexist.
