Vienna is home to the Bertalanffy Center for the Study of Systems Science (BCSSS), an Austrian independent research institute, working on Systems Science and Systems Design / Wien beheimatet das Bertalanffy Center for the Study of Systems Science (BCSSS), ein österreichisches unabhängiges Forschungsinstitut, welches den Grundlagen der Systemwissenschaft sowie dem Systems Design gewidmet ist.

The profile of the BCSSS was found to overlap with the Health Impact Quantification (HIQ) initiative, so a colloquium was planned for mutual benefit / Angesichts deutlicher Nähe zwischen dem BCSSS-Profil und den Anliegen der Initiative „Health Impact Quantification“ (HIQ) wurde zum wechselseitigen Nutzen ein Kolloquium geplant.

Colloquium participants: presenters and chairpersons (from Australia, Canada, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom) of the Workshops 8.K and 9.K at the European Public Health (EPH) conference, 12 Nov 2016 plus additional modelers, BCSSS members, and interested parties / KolloquiumsteilnehmerInnen: Vortragende und Chairs (aus Australien, Kanada, Deutschland, Griechenland, den Niederlanden und UK) der Workshops 8.K und 9.K der EPH-Konferenz am 12.11.16 sowie zusätzliche Modellierer, BCSSS-Mitglieder und weitere interessierte Personen.

This was one of the rare occasions where different types of health modeling (environmental health; personal risk factors; national disease control system) were jointly discussed, from a Public health perspective / Eine der seltenen Gelegenheiten, unterschiedliche Arten der Gesundheitsmodellierung (Umwelt und Gesundheit; persönliche Risikofaktoren; nationales Krankheitsbekämpfungssystem) gemeinsam aus Public Health-Perspektive zu diskutieren.

Karl Ludwig von Bertalanffy (born 1901 near Wien, died 1972 in Buffalo, New York), trained as a biologist, was one of the founders of general system theory (GST) / Karl Ludwig von Bertalanffy (geboren 1901 nahe Wien, gestorben 1972 in Buffalo, New York), ausgebildet als Biologe, war einer der Gründer der Allgemeinen Systemtheorie.

“General system theory is intended to elaborate properties., principles and laws that are characteristic of “systems” in general, irrespective of their particular kind, the nature of their component elements, and the relations or “forces” between them. Today’s jog tour was no. 173, with numbering restarted after a major break. It felt like being no. 1000 in life-long counting / Heutiger Lauf war Nr. 173, in Neuzählung nach längerer Laufpause. Es könnte Nr. 1000 in einer Gesamtzählung gewesen sein.

When jogging, memories from much earlier tours tend to spring up vividly / Das Laufgedächtnis lässt auch weit zurückliegende Läufe erstaunlich lebendig werden.

The National Park (Biosphere Reserve / UNESCO World Natural Heritage) of the Wadden Seas hosts a range of characteristic structures, including piers, stilt houses and beacons / Im Nationalpark (Biosphärenreservat / UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe) Wattenmeer befinden sich auch charakteristische Bauwerke wie Seebrücken, Pfahlbauten und Leuchttürme.

img_7630Lighthouse Westerhever: 41.5 meters high, sitting on a mound, built in 1906; with 2 guards’ houses. There is a guided tour of the lighthouse / Leuchtturm Westerhever, 41.5 m hoch, auf einer Warft, erbaut 1906, mit 2 Wärterhäusern. Besuch des Leuchtturms im Rahmen einer Führung, www.westerhever-nordsee.de.

One of the guards’ houses functions as National Park visitor center, informing, e.g., on conflicts of use such as oil production, gravel dredging, shrimp fishery, or mussels breeding / Eines der Wärterhäuser fungiert als Nationalpark-Haus und informiert u.a. über Nutzungskonflikte wie z.B. Erdölförderung, Sand- und Kiesgewinnung, Krabbenfischerei und Miesmuschelkulturwirtschaft.

Caused by cosmic tidal rhythms, windstorms and secular changes, the area has a long history of both reclamation and perdition of land. The most fundamental current challenge stems from anthropogenic climate change and rising sea levels / Durch den kosmischen Gezeitenrhythmus, (Un-)Wetterlagen und langfristige Schwankungen weist die Gegend eine bewegte Geschichte von Landgewinnung und Landverlust auf. Die größte Gefahr für das Wattenmeer liegt nunmehr im anthropogenen Klimawandel mit Anstieg des Meeresspiegels.

Several artful sketches of “light painting” were sighted on the North Sea coast in the early morning of Saturday 8 Oct – obviously stemming from JMW Turner’s sketchbook  / Am frühen Samstagmorgen zeigten sich an der Nordseeküste kunstvolle Beispiele von Lichtmalerei, die offenkundig aus dem Skizzenbuch von JMW Turner stammten.

Walkers and runners witnessing the display mused how these works of the  – slightly eccentric – English landscape painter (1775-1851) might have travelled to Eiderstedt peninsula / Passierende Spaziergänger und Läufer fragten sich, wie diese Werke des  – leicht exzentrischen – englischen Landschaftsmalers (1775-1851) wohl zur Halbinsel Eiderstedt gelangten.
