The NUTS classification (Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics) is a hierarchical system for dividing up the economic territory of the EU for the purpose of: (i) collection, development and harmonisation of European regional statistics, (ii) socio-economic analyses of the regions / Die NUTS-Klassifikation (Systematik der Gebietseinheiten für die Statistik) ist ein hierarchisches System zur Untergliederung des EU-Wirtschaftsraums für folgende Zwecke: (i) Erfassung, Entwicklung und Harmonisierung regionalstatistischer Daten der EU, (ii) Erstellung sozioökonomischer Analysen der Regionen.

  • NUTS 1: major socio-economic regions (in D: the federal states) / sozioökonomische Großregionen (in D: die Bundesländer)
  • NUTS 2: basic regions for the application of regional policies (in D: provinces) / Basisregionen für regionalpolitische Maßnahmen (in D: Regierungsbezirke)
  • NUTS 3: small regions for specific diagnoses (in D: counties, independent cities)  / kleine Regionen für spezifische Diagnosen (in D: Kreise, kreisfreie Städte).

The current NUTS 2013 classification is valid from 1 January 2015 and lists 98 regions at NUTS 1 level, 276 regions at NUTS 2, and 1,342 regions at NUTS 3 level / Die aktuelle NUTS-2013-Klassifikation, (gültig seit 1.1.2015) umfasst 98 Regionen auf NUTS-1-Ebene, 276 Regionen auf NUTS-2-Ebene und 1,342 Regionen auf NUTS-3-Ebene.
