This year, Katharina Sieverding received the Käthe Kollwitz Prize which is awarded by the Akademie der Künste / Katharina Sieverding erhielt den diesjährigen Käthe-Kollwitz-Preis der Akademie der Künste.

The exhibition includes 19 works sized 252 x 356 cm, several of them publicly posted since the 1990s, and nine wall-sized projections, each of them including 580 triptychs of photo compositions TESTCUTS 1966-2010 / Die Ausstellung zeigt 19 Arbeiten im Format 252 x 356 cm, die zum Teil seit den 1990er Jahren im öffentlichen Raum großflächig plakatiert wurden, und neun wandgroße Projektionen von jeweils 580 Fotomontage-Triptychen TESTCUTS 1966-2010.

With the Käthe Kollwitz Prize, the Akademie der Künste is honouring a German artist who has been a pioneer in an age of large-scale photo art since the 1960s. An underlying theme in her work is concerned with “identity as individuality and dividualism as a collective individual” / Mit dem Käthe-Kollwitz-Preis ehrt die Akademie eine deutsche Künstlerin, die seit den 1960er Jahren das Zeitalter der großformatigen Fotokunst einleitete. Ihr Grundthema ist die „Identität als Individualität und Dividualität und als kollektives Individuum“.

“In the public imagination, landscape architecture seems still to be determined by the desire to plan for harmony between the burgeoning advance of cities, on the one hand, and nature, on the other. But this idea ceased long ago to reflect the current state of a discipline that … has since evolved in a more analytic, critical direction“ / „Landschaftsarchitektur scheint in der öffentlichen Vorstellung noch immer von der Sehnsucht bestimmt, für die Harmonisierung zwischen den explosiv ausgreifenden Städten einerseits und der Natur andererseits zu planen. Lucia Moholy (1894–1989) was among the most renowned female photographers of the early 20th century and published A Hundred Years of Photograph 1839-1939, a standard work on the history of photography / Lucia Moholy (1894-1989) zählt zu den namhaftesten Fotografinnen des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts; sie publizierte A Hundred Years of Photography 1839-1939, ein Standardwerk zur Fotografiegeschichte.

The exhibition shows her photographic work from the period following her emigration from Germany to England (1934), including English landscape and architectural photographs, portraits, and photographs from her journeys to the Balkans and Near East / Die Ausstellung präsentiert ihre englischen Landschafts- und Architekturaufnahmen, Porträts sowie Fotografien ihrer Reisen in die Balkanstaaten und den Nahen Osten.

This exhibition is a part of the Berlin branch of the European Month of Photography (EMOP) Berlin 2016 – the largest German festival for photography, taking place each other year in Berlin, www.emop-berlin.eu/en/ / Die Ausstellung gehört zum Europäischen Monat der Fotografie (EMOP) Berlin 2016 –  das größte deutsche Fotofestival, das alle zwei Jahre in Berlin stattfindet, www.emop-berlin.eu/de/.

“As a consequence of the devastating Thirty Years’ War, the Great Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg started making Berlin into a fortified stronghold in 1650“ / „Nach den Erfahrungen aus dem verheerenden Dreißigjährigen Krieg ließ der Große Kurfürst, Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg, Berlin ab 1650 zur Festung ausbauen.“

First being a spot on the outskirts, the Berlin castle evolved to become the heart of the city when the Prussian kings expanded their capital to the west / Durch den nach Westen gerichteten Ausbau der Landeshauptstadt durch die Preußen-Könige rückte das Berliner Schloss vom Rand in die Mitte.

For centuries, the Berlin Palace dominated the city. Following severe damage during the Second World War, GDR authorities decided to demolish it / Das Berliner Schloss prägte jahrhundertelang die Stadt. Nach schweren Kriegsschäden wurde es im Auftrag der DDR-Machthaber gesprengt.

The exhibition includes several city models / Die Ausstellung zeigt mehrere Stadtmodelle:

• Fortified town of Berlin-Cölln-Friedrichswerder around 1690, model scale 1:450, lime wood and copper beech, produced by Armin Luda 1970/71; based on the perspective plan Residentia Electoralis Brandenburgica by Johann Bernhard Schultz, 1688; Stadtmuseum Berlin / Festungsstadt Berlin-Cölln-Friedrichswerder um 1690; Modell 1:450, Lindenholz u. Rotbuche, erstellt von Armin Luda 1970/71; basierend auf dem Perspektivplan Residentia Electoralis Brandenburgica von Johann Bernhard Schultz, 1688; Stadtmuseum Berlin
• Capital and “residence city” Berlin around 1750, model scale 1:1000, wood, desigend by Dr.Ing Walter Winkler, created by E.Prenzel, coloured by Göhring; based on the Plan de la Ville de Berlin by Samuel Count von Schmettau, 1748; Stadtmuseum Berlin / Haupt- und Residenzstadt Berlin um 1750, Modell 1:1000, Holz, entworfen von Dr.Ing Walter Winkler, ausgeführt von E.Prenzel, Farbgebung Göhring; basierend auf dem Plan de la Ville de Berlin von Samuel Count von Schmettau, 1748; Stadtmuseum Berlin

Currently, the castle is being rebuilt as “Humboldt Forum”, with baroque facade decoration and a new concept of utilization / Gegenwärtig wird das Schloss als „Humboldtforum“ mit alter Fassade und neuem Nutzungskonzept neu aufgebaut.
