Today, the 120 Alster swans returned from their wintering grounds (Eppendorfer Mühlenteich) to the Alster. The procedure took 1h 20min / Heute kehrten die ca. 120 Alsterschwäne aus ihrem Winterquartier am Eppendorfer Mühlenteich zur Alster zurück. The Hamburg Swan tradition (www.alsterschwaene.de) dates back to the 11th century. The position of “Schwanenvater” came into existence in 1674; this is the oldest established post of the city / Das Hamburger Schwanenwesen (www.alsterschwaene.de) gibt es seit dem 11. Jahrhundert. Die Stelle des “Schwanenvaters” existiert seit 1674 und ist die älteste Behördenplanstelle der Stadt.

Built as a water tower in 1912-1916 with Art Deco elements (architect Oscar Menzel from Dresden, supervised by town planner and architect Fritz Schumacher), the building was converted into a planetarium in 1929-1930 / Erbaut 1912-1916 als Wasserturm mit Art Deco-Elementen (Architekt Oscar Menzel aus Dresden unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Fritz Schumacher), wurde das Gebäude 1929-1930 in ein Planetarium umgewandelt.

Nearly 65 meters high, it is located in the Hamburg Stadtpark and features both advanced planetarium technology as well as an observation deck (at 42 meters) offering a panoramic view / Knapp 65 m hoch befindet es sich im Hamburger Stadtpark und enthält ein technisch hochentwickeltes Planetarium sowie (auf 42 m Höhe) eine Aussichtsplattform mit Panoramablick.

According to the website (www.planetarium-hamburg.de), this is the most frequently visited planetarium in the German-speaking countries, offering a range of educational and cultural programs, performances, lectures and concerts / Laut Website ist dies das meistbesuchte deutschsprachige Planetarium; mit einem breiten Angebot von Wissensshows, Fachvorträgen, Musikproduktionen und Konzerten.

It is currently closed for the public, for expansion work (new entrance area with improved access and additional exhibit spaces). Public shows are planned to be resumed in early 2017 / Gegenwärtig ist das Planetarium geschlossen wegen Ausbauarbeiten (neuer Eingangsbereich, verbesserter Zugang, zusätzliche Nutzungsräume). Das öffentliche Programm soll ab Anfang 2017 fortgesetzt werden.

There are contacts with other planetariums and institutions incl. the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA. A centre of competence “Sun – Earth – Life” is being created. An emergent role is seen as an educational center on climate change, aiming to make complex global-local interrelations intelligible for all / Es bestehen Kontakte zu anderen Planetarien und Institutionen wie der Europäischen Weltraumagentur ESA und der amerikanischen NASA. Ein Kompetenzzentrum „Sonne-Erde-Leben” wird aufgebaut. Das Planetarium entwickelt sich zu einem Bildungszentrum für den Klimawandel, um komplexe lokale und globale Zusammenhänge einem breiten Publikum verständlich zu machen.

The Planetarium, together with institutions from Belgium, Norway, Ukraine and the USA, is involved in the EU-funded (7th Framework Programme) space research project “Advanced Forecast For Ensuring Communications Through Space” (AFFECTS) which aims to provide advanced early space weather warning to protect communication systems, www.affects-fp7.eu / Das Planetarium ist beteiligt an einem EU-geförderten Raumforschungsprojekt AFFECTS.

This year’s version of an annual competition of photography graduates. The project was set up in 2004 by Josefine Raab and Stefan Becht as a private initiative in support of talented young photographers / Diesjähriger Durchgang eines jährlichen Wettbewerbs für Absolventen im Bereich Fotografie. Projekt gestartet von Josefine Raab und Stefan Becht als private Initiative zur Förderung talentierter junger Fotografinnen.

Motto: Quo vadis, world? / Thema: Wie geht es weiter, Welt?

Streamlines – Oceans, global trade and migration / Streamlines – Ozeane, Welthandel und Migration

Hamburg, Deichtorhallen, Hall for Contemporary Art / Halle für Aktuelle Kunst, Deichtorstr. 1-2, 4 Dec 2015 – 13 March 2016

Artistic projects on oceans (“the sixth continent”), waterways, flight and migration, ports and international trade, with some of the artists featured at former Documenta expositions. Curated by Koyo Kouoh from Dakar / Künstlerische Projekte zu den Ozeanen (“Sechster Kontinent”), Seewegen, Flucht und Migration, Häfen und Welthandel, wobei einige der KünsterlInnen an vergangenen Documenta-Ausstellungen beteiligt waren. Kuratiert von Koyo Kouoh aus Dakar.

The exhibition is meant to address the streams of communication and information, of people and goods. Several of the works are related to the history as well as the current and future situation of Hamburg as a “gateway to the world”. The viewers’ experiences are intended to be guided by the key terms “Action”, “Consumption”, “Confrontation”, “Reconfrontation”, “Participation” and “Narrative” / Die Ausstellung will Kommunikations- und Informationsströme, Menschen- und Warenströme thematisieren. Mehrere Werke beziehen sich auf geschichtlichen Hintergrund sowie aktuelle und künftige Situation Hamburgs als „Tor zur Welt“. Die Erfahrungen von BetrachterInnen sollen von den Schlüsselbegriffen „Aktion“, „Konsum“, „Konfrontation“, „Umgestaltung“ [etwas überraschend als Äquivalent zu „Reconfrontation“], „Teilnahme“ und „Narration“ geleitet werden.
